Occupy London will start on 15 October, as part of a global sit-in against corporate greed that started with Occupy Wall Street and is inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings.

Any comments on this protest movement?

Some responses of religious people to the Occupy protest movement, which has now become global.

I find it interesting that there is dissension within St Paul's Cathedral about the Occupy London sit-in in the square in front of the cathedral. So much so that one member of the cathedral clergy has resigned his post.
Here's a real opportunity to ask what would Jesus do?
Would He worry about the £20,000 a day cathedral staff say they are losing in tourist revenues and ask the protesters to leave?
Or would He solidly support a movement that is against corporate profiteering and financial corruption and perhaps invited them in out of the cold, to sleep inside the cathedral?
Are the concerns of the C of E more aligned with the City or with Jesus?

One American preacher has no doubts that Jesus would support the worldwide Occupy movement: http://chuckcurrie.blogs.com/chuck_currie/2011/10/jesus-and-the-occ...

Good question outside St Paul's Cathedral today.

Financial interests appear to affect the reactions of most St Paul's Cathedral clergy to the Occupy London sit-in.

Would Jesus take City money & refuse support to people demonstrating against corruption?

Would Jesus suppress a report on moral standards of bankers in the City, for the sake of City sponsorship of a beautiful cathedral's upkeep?

Would Jesus value a beautiful building over people's basic needs?

I'm finding it extremely hard to reconcile the actions of St Paul's Cathedral clergy with Christian principles and wish someone who understands their thinking would enlighten me.

Excellent article on Church of England's response to the Occupy London protests.

This makes the Church of England look really bad. Why are our clergy behaving like this?

St Paul's Institute report critical of bankers' morality suppressed.

Agreement from the Archbishop of Canterbury with proposals of the Occupy movement while St Paul's Cathedral clergy withdraw their application for an injunction against protesters and the City of London Corporation reconsider their application.

If asked the question "What would Jesus do?" then I might have to talk about camels, eyes of needles, the cleansing of the Temple of money-changers.

But then I ask myself "Am I just giving my own view and attaching the shibboleth-word "Jesus" to my opinion?" I think that the protesters may have done this.

The clergy no doubt are trying to deal with a difficult situation in the world of mammon, finding their way through the maze with, one would hope, a Christian moral compass. A difficult job.

Sad that a Christian in the Occupy London movement felt this  about St Paul's Cathedral:

Oh St Pauls, why?

o cathedral what have u done?
where has ur christianity run?
what would jesus do i ask?
faced with the chapters awkward task.

what do do with all those tents?
support them or charge them rent?
who can blame them to be fair,
with so much injustice everywhere.

ppl sleeping in the cold,
while the cathedral resorts to crimes untold,
lying in court,
shaming their kind,

leaving the values of jesus behind.
crucifying jesus with evry action,
forgetting that they create such sad reactions,
well with goldman sachs on the board of trustess,
and hsbc robbing oaps……

such unethical corps pulling the strings,
makes a sickening situation as the bell rings,
huge wooden doors and hearts much the same,
but if i may ask?who is to blame?

o cathedral what have u done?
why have u allowed such evil to run?
why do you not just do as god says,
and act justly and truthfully in all your ways?

no legal action says ur chapter and staff,
but i heard it in court, dont make me laugh,
not one kind word for us did i hear,
when the witness you sent spouted crap down my ears,

i couldnt believe it
that i admit
i sat there and thought
“is this really it

is this religious cathedral this huge house of god,
going to stand their and lie,it was rather odd!
o dear cathedral on the 11th jan,
the violence u didnt want will happen
partly at ur hands.

John 2:15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.

Smeagologists

Once someone asked me “What is a Smeagologist?” My reply was simply, “Whatever you want it to be!” Seeing as I invented the name, I think I have a right to decide that it be a neutral term that is based roughly upon one’s emergence in a society that is progressively reductionist and bordering on Nihilism on one side and Contemplation on the other, I prefer the Contemplative side but attend most vigorously to the other seeing as our pale blue dot is gradually disappearing and who knows one day…See More

I ask for your prayers.

On Wednesday my mother died. My sister and I were there. We prayed again with our mother. Then she fell asleep peacefully in the arms of my sister. Our pastor arrived a short time later. He spoke again the blessing over our mother. The funeral will be next Friday. I ask for your prayers for our mother and us, in this time of parting.See More
