Organ Improvisation

Perhaps this is too much a specialised issue for this board, but I wonder if anyone would be interested in this, and what they would think of the videos I mention. Although I only play the organ…Continue

Advent -- towards Christmas/ Second Coming/both?

Advent seems to be a time when we look towards the birth of Christ, and especially the role of Jesus in the seasonal festivitives. I think that this has been discussed very well elsewhere on these…Continue

I wonder if anybody would be interested in telling us all about books which have been helpful to them (the Bible's inclusion is assumed)? Some of my own choice would be: The Imitation of…Continue

David Crowther replied to David Crowther's discussion 'Organ Improvisation'
Sadly, Gerre died last week, January 2012. I never met him, but by all accounts he was a lovely man. And his work, and especially his famous manual, has been a source of inspiration in my own attempts at organ improvisation.

David Crowther replied to Lynda Keen's discussion 'Occupy London'
If asked the question "What would Jesus do?" then I might have to talk about camels, eyes of needles, the cleansing of the Temple of money-changers. But then I ask myself "Am I just giving my own view and attaching the…

David Crowther replied to David Crowther's discussion 'Extemporising on the Church Organ' in the group Music Group
Although I play organ at an Anglican Church, I sometimes fill in at a Unitarian Church when their organist is ill. Last week the minister and I shared terrorist-jokes about organists:   1. What's the difference between an organist and a…

Extemporising on the Church Organ

Thumbnail
I'm trying to train myself to improvise music on the organ, a difficult skill, but often necessary. I do not know if there are any church organists reading anything on LiC, but if there is, they might be interested in some advice I got from the PianoWorld forums, given by an organist called Vectistim: …See More

Holiday

Spent a few days on the East Coast of Yorkshire. Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes. Good museum at Staithes Chapel with excellent historical postcards and photos, and an old radio programme about Staithes from "Down Your Way" (that brings back memories of the old wireless). Lovely week -- a good joyous fitting ending.See More

I like the comment about the Christian family. It could even be that people who have no effective natural family supporting them in the social world can find a valuable and effective family within the church. But also there can be conflicts…

Karg-Elert: one for any organists out there

The excellent young organist in the LiC video service: http://www.londoninternetchurch.org.uk/worship/eucharist plays voluntaries by Sigfrid Karg-Elert. Karg-Elert was a German early-C20 composer who is all but forgotten except by organists, and then remembered mainly fo one opus number, albeit an opus number with over five dozen different organ pieces. He always has had a following in Britain but was not really accepted in…See More

Christ: both God and Man

Story A person goes to a monastic community for spiritual guidance. Person:   When I pray, do you think it is ok to smoke as well? Monk:     No, I don't think that's a good idea! Person:    Well, is it ok if I pray while I smoke? Monk:     (reluctantly) Well, I suppose it is. Story told in the diocesan September news. Again, new to me, but probably well-known. (Told by Ven Paul Slater, Archdeacan of Craven.) Perhaps in these non-smoking times it has less impact than originally. This story fits…See More

Interregnum

Last Sunday's traditional service was taken by our young friendly curate, learning his trade. We are awaiting our next vicar later this year, and everyone is pulling together, as is usual in interregnums ( ..na?).It always strikes me that the CE has an excellent system of training, teaching its curates not only the mechanics but also the politics of church life.Perhaps this is expressed in our theology: God is not only Divine but also Human. Church life is both spiritual and worldly, and they…See More

Yes, Joyce, you are right. The more comments the better. If we all had our say something of value may come out of it. I think that some people call this "the Wisdom of the Crowd". Not all crowds are mobs IMO.   So, yes,…

Family

This Sunday the family came to tea.

With my wife an excellent hostess, it was good company, good conversation, "we'll all get by with a little help from our friends" -- and when family are friends too (not always the case with families, but I'm lucky) then there are times when heaven can be on Earth.

But also time to think of those less fortunate.

Thank you for letting me know about the strange message you got from Lindy Wast. I've now removed her from the forum.
Owing to a power cut, I spent yesterday evening reading by candlelight, which would have been as pleasantly relaxing as Night Prayer except that I needed my computer!
God bless. Lynda

Hello, David, and welcome to the London Internet Church community forum.
I'm glad to hear that Night Prayer is helping you. I find it very restful and calming to listen to it before I sleep.
I hope you find other things to enjoy on our website as well.
I edit the forum so if you have any questions, just ask.
Looking forward to getting to know you.
God bless. Lynda

Words of The Day

Psalm 118    1    O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever. 2    Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 3    Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 4    Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 5    I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.…See More
