Story
A person goes to a monastic community for spiritual guidance.
Person: When I pray, do you think it is ok to smoke as well?
Monk: No, I don't think that's a good idea!
Person: Well, is it ok if I pray while I smoke?
Monk: (reluctantly) Well, I suppose it is.
Story told in the diocesan September news. Again, new to me, but probably well-known. (Told by Ven Paul Slater, Archdeacan of Craven.) Perhaps in these non-smoking times it has less impact than originally.
This story fits well with my view last week that the world and the sacred come together in Christ, IMO.
=======
Today in church, as fits with our early first service tradtional values, we had two old hymns with a deep understanding of the Faith; with difficult ideas leaving you with something to think about. (The later drums-and-guitar service has a different set of values.)
1
Awake my soul and with the sun thy daily stage of duty run.
Shake off dull sloth and joyful rise to pay thy morning sacrifice,
2
God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform.
He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm.
...
His purposes will ripen fast unfolding every hour.
The bud may have a bitter taste but sweet will be the flower.
(Perhaps these thoughts are out of sync with the times, but they'll do for me.)
