This Sunday the family came to tea.

With my wife an excellent hostess, it was good company, good conversation, "we'll all get by with a little help from our friends" -- and when family are friends too (not always the case with families, but I'm lucky) then there are times when heaven can be on Earth.

But also time to think of those less fortunate.

I like the comment about the Christian family. It could even be that people who have no effective natural family supporting them in the social world can find a valuable and effective family within the church. But also there can be conflicts between natural and church families -- blood is not necessarily thicker than holy water -- but this, perhaps, for another time.

I agree that lack of family cohesion could be one reason for the recent riots. Poor parenting is certainly a problem in the area I live in and I think in Britain in general.

Yes, I also think that the family is very important. The Christian family is also a germ cell of goodness. Perhaps this could be the reason for the recent riots. We know the family cohesion. But many young people no longer know it. I am grateful for the example of my parents who raised me for the better. So I can walk my path of faith.

Smeagologists

Once someone asked me “What is a Smeagologist?” My reply was simply, “Whatever you want it to be!” Seeing as I invented the name, I think I have a right to decide that it be a neutral term that is based roughly upon one’s emergence in a society that is progressively reductionist and bordering on Nihilism on one side and Contemplation on the other, I prefer the Contemplative side but attend most vigorously to the other seeing as our pale blue dot is gradually disappearing and who knows one day…See More

I ask for your prayers.

On Wednesday my mother died. My sister and I were there. We prayed again with our mother. Then she fell asleep peacefully in the arms of my sister. Our pastor arrived a short time later. He spoke again the blessing over our mother. The funeral will be next Friday. I ask for your prayers for our mother and us, in this time of parting.See More
